Water is a precious commodity in the Northern Territory of Australia and in Alice Springs the annual average rainfall is only 24mm.

When it does rain, usually in a thunderstorm and rainfalls quickly, the otherwise dry Todd River flows through the Alice. Before "ton water" was supplied, the aboriginals knew where to dig for drinking water.
